Manaia
Tīkapa Moana
Tīkapa Moana, also known as the Hauraki Gulf, is the coastal area bounded by the Auckland region, the Coromandel Peninsula and Aotea Great Barrier Island. The area holds cultural importance for Ngāti Pūkenga, who rely on its resources for sustenance and connection.

Manaia Marae is located on land south of Coromandel township on the Coromandel Peninsula. The wharenui is named Te Kou o Rehua, after the paramount chief and renowned warrior of Ngāti Pūkenga and Te Tawera during the 19th century. After Te Kou o Rehua assisted in avenging the death of Te Waha of Ngāti Maru, land at Manaia was gifted to him and his people. The resting place of Te Kou o Rehua is Hauturu maunga, which stands behind Manaia Marae.

Revered as a vital waterway and food source for Ngāti Pūkenga, Manaia River has sustained generations of the iwi. The riverbanks are dotted with wāhi tapu and pā sites that exemplify the deep-rooted whakapapa of Ngāti Pūkenga.

Hauturu

Te Kou o Rehua was the paramount chief of Ngāti Pūkenga and Te Tāwera during much of the 19th century. He was known as a great warrior in battle and for his superior knowledge of battle strategies, which won him many accolades. After Te Kou o Rehua assisted in avenging the death of Te Waha of Ngāti Maru, land at Manaia on the Coromandel Peninsula was gifted to him and his people. Subsequent gifts to Ngāti Pūkenga recognised over a half-century of military alliances, intermarriages, whanaungatanga, friendship and mutual respect.
